Literacy Block:
*Word Study (Letterland): All students in grades K-2, at York Elementary, will participate and utilize the Letterland program throughout the year. In Quarter 1, Kindergarteners will be taught the shape of all 26 upper case (capital letter) and 26 lower case letters, and the sound each letter makes along with the motion to remember each Letterland Character. Afterwards, we review back on each letter (not in abc order) working on the sound and shape. Students will also learn to hear the difference between short vs. long vowel sounds once they are introduced to magic "e" and should be able to read and write a short or long vowel word correctly. As the year progresses, students will be tested on this skill several times. Students will also have blending activities (putting sounds together to create a word), and learn the difference between singular and plural by adding the letter S (Sammy Snake) to the end of a word.
Below are several other Letterland topics we will discuss & test student proficiency on:
-word families -rhyme -vowel stealers -digraphs -syllables

*Writing (Writer's Workshop): All students in grades K-5, at York Elementary, will participate and utilize the Writer's Workshop program. In Kindergarten, students will also utilize a writing journal (write down their thoughts, complete a writing prompt, or write down notes from our Literacy Block). The students will learn various ways to write in specific writing units in Writer's Workshop. For example: How to Booklet, Narrative Stories, Opinion Pieces, Writing a Letter, and Writing a List, to name a few. We will focus more on the written content itself than correcting all of the conventional mistakes a child makes at this writing stage. For students who are more advance writers, I will be expecting more in their developmental range.
Students will also get to a point where they will have a writing folder. One side has a red dot for unfinished writing pieces to complete. The other side has a green dot for completed writing pieces. At the end of the specific writing unit they may revise (begin to publish) a favorite piece of writing from the green dot pocket. The last day of the unit, we have a celebration of their final piece of writing. This is the breakup of the W.W. program:

Blue Homework Folder:
At the beginning of each month, you will receive a monthly communication log. Please feel free to jot down any transportation changes, or notes that need my attention on the log. If you need more room to write, please write on a separate piece of paper. We clean out the student mailboxes each day so you are always up-to-date on your child's progress for the week's assignments. Now is a wonderful time to help your child strengthen their communication skills with you by asking about their learning throughout the week. Use the weekly newsletter (outlines lesson taught) and the checked papers as a guide to see what they have remembered from the activity lesson, what they needed help with or what they correctly answered, and to complete any unfinished work to bridge any gaps so they don't get further behind.
